Portfolio of Detroit 1796

Item Category: Collectibles/Memorabilia

What an amazing piece of history!  One of a kind with only 300 printed, Patrick McNiff's Plan of the Settlements at Detroit 1796 is an unusual find for you, and it's in good condition.  On July 11, 1796 Detroit joined the United States.  Patrick McNiff, a former British deputy-surveyor was commissioned to draw a map of the Detroit area at that time.  A six foot long manuscript map was prepared depicting the region's waterways as well as the ribbon farms and names of the property owners.  No similar document of this date and with so much detail is known to exist.  The map remained in the possession of the James McHenry family until 1944 when it was purchased at auction by the library at the University of Michigan.  The portfolio includes the five sections of the map reproduced in collotype facsimile from the original manuscript in the Clements Library.  Also included is a descriptive and historical essay by F. Clever Bald of the University.  The cloth and board portfolio measures 18 by 22 inches and is tied with it's original string.
