Majolica Platter

Item Category:

Majolica - a general term for pottery glazed with an opaque tin enamel which conceals the color of the clay beneath.  Made since the 14th century, today's collector is most likely to find Victorian majolica.  Bold colors and distinctive designs of flowers, leaves and ferns on the embossed surface give the piece a distinctive appearance.  The heavy colorful ware is rarely marked, but in this case, there is a green X the color of the trellis edge on the bottom of this 11" x 9" piece.
